Alex Fadler, Freshman at Hallsville High School, gave a presentation to the club regarding the Student Ambassador Program. Alex has the opportunity to go to Australia and New Zealand as part of a delegation of student ambassadors. Alex shared highlights of some of the adventures this trip will take him on such as seeing the Great Barrier Reef, hiking, meeting with local tribes, and attending an Australian school. Alex will earn a High School Credit by participating in this trip. His fund raising efforts include saving money from mowing lawns, donations from church, and other sponsors. His group will be leaving in June for 22 days. The Student Ambassador program was founded in 1956 by Dwight D. Eisenhower.

To help Alex with his fund raising efforts or for more information, contact Alex or his mother Penny at psfadler@msn.com. Alex promises in return that donors will receive a personal thank you post card from Australia/New Zealand. Alex! Get that writing hand warmed up because we at Hallsville Optimists believe you are going to have a great luck fundraising.

Cindy Quick, Parents as Teachers, gave a presentation and showed a video on the Dollywood Literacy program. This program was founded and fully funded at that time by Dolly Parton with the goal of increasing literacy for the children of the region in which she grew up. The program was so popular that other areas chose to also join the program. However, the program became so popular that eventually Dolly was unable to provide full funding. This is where groups such as the Hallsville Optimists can help. For a donation of $27.00 per year per child, each child enrolled in the program can receive an age appropriate book each month from birth until age 5. This program highly encourages funding participation by organizations and groups rather than enrollment by families. The goal is to take the burden of book purchases off the parents. For more information on this program, contact Cindy Quick at the Hallsville RIV School District.
