BOARD NEWS

The Hallsville Optimist Board met on January 3, 2007 at Red Top Church at 7 pm. Board members present included Sherri Briedwell, Kate Grant, Mike Grigery, Elly Adkins-Connolly, Barry Carmack, Boo Cathey and Dennis Adkins. Kyle George was also present.

Tournament dates to remember:

  • January 12-14 th - 5 th grade basketball tourney
  • February 16-18 th – 6 th grade basketball tourney

Danny Hardin is coordinating these tournaments and needs several volunteers to work.

The treasurer’s report was read and the balance of the cash accounts was noted. We are a little low on cash right now but should be in better shape after the basketball tournaments. We have all bills paid except for the Mid-City bill to pay for Haunted House lumber. The bill is currently around $1,800. However, the amount will be reduced significantly per Mike Grigery as much of the lumber was returned to Mid-City. We should be getting a revised bill for the amount owed subsequent to returning the lumber.

January 20 th we will be having a club meeting and dinner to discuss the plans for the new land. The board agreed to form two committees: one committee to plan the new building and another committee to organize the sports complex layout and construction. The meeting/dinner is tentatively scheduled to be held at Boo’s house. The club may pay for meat for the dinner and everyone is invited to come and bring a dish of some sort. Sherri is going to update the calling list so that the board members can call all other members and encourage them to come and join in on the brainstorming session at the meeting/dinner. The board also discussed the possibility of selling the house trailer that is currently on the land. This sale would help start the land improvements necessary to have soccer fields.

Sherri agreed to get in touch with Katie Merrill to see about the possibility of our club obtaining NAP credits. The credits would be helpful in soliciting donations for the land and building construction.

This Saturday will be our first continental breakfast for the entire club. The club is going back to meeting each Saturday. The Saturday after the board meeting will continue to be a continental breakfast with coffee, juice and donuts. There will be no charge for the continental breakfast but donations will be appreciated to cover the cost. Board members have agreed to rotate responsibility for bringing the continental breakfast.

January 27 th will be the Texas Hold ‘Em tournament at the community center. Kyle is organizing the event. It will allow for 80 attendees that must pay $30 per person to pre-register. Ten table sponsors are necessary at $100 each to cover the cost of prizes for winners. The registration fees will be profit for the club expected at $2,400. The event is expected to start at noon.

The date for casino night in the spring has not yet been determined. It will possibly be held in May and may be determined based on the completion of the fair grounds building.

The board held a discussion regarding the email from Chris Crane. Apparently there was a family who needed to be sponsored for Christmas but slipped through and was not provided gifts by either 4-H or the school. Sherri agreed to talk with Chris to find out more details on how our club can help.

The board held a discussion regarding hosting casino nights for other clubs. Mike Grigery and Kyle George both commented on their experiences with hosting casino night for the Elks Lodge. It was an easy commitment and profitable to the club. The club agreed to research doing this type of event again for fundraising.

The meeting was adjourned. The next board meeting is scheduled for February 7, 2007
